Maulana Azad Medical College is situated in the National capital city
of Delhi. It straddles the historic old city of Delhi on one side and
the more modern Lutyen's Delhi on the other. The sprawling campus
includes the college and three of its major associated hospitals namely
Lok Nayak Hospital and GB Pant Hospital and the Guru Nanak Eye Centre.
This institution is named after the great patriot and educationist,
Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad and was established in 1959. Over the period,
the college has emerged as premier medical institute of the country and
is chosen over others by the brightest of students. The students of MAMC
are its pride and its strength.
Department of Community Medicine previously known as Preventive and
Social Medicine started from the inception of Maulana Azad Medical
College with the vision to achieve highest level of public health in the
country through medical professional who has been trained in all skills
at various level of public health system including community based
health centres. The department runs one rural (Barwala) and one urban
(Gokalpuri) health centres and two health centres in slums (Balmiki
Basti, and Turkman Gate) adjacent to the college. At the secondary level
of services department also coordinates with rural Maharishi Balmiki
Hospital where undergraduate and postgraduates have residential posting.
Health services to beneficiaries and training to interns is also
provided in collaboration with NGOs, and other government bodies.
Faculty is known for their excellent achievements in academics and
community-based health services and research in the areas of HIV/AIDS,
reproductive health, tuberculosis, polio, environmental and occupational
safety, mental health, adolescent health, etc. The department is having
large faculty for medical and nursing PhD, MD, MBBS, degrees, diplomas
and fellowship courses. Department has all the state of art facility for
teaching and training.
